Recent projects and roles

Lead UX designer for Chrysalis Finance

User portal re-design and build.

Taking on a more senior, independent role has suited me well, I really like the extra freedom and responsibility.

In preparation for this project I led user interviews to gain true insight into areas in need of improvement within the current portal. I also interviewed key team members with key experience and insight into the current portal's working areas and limitations.

Then I analysed and shared my findings with the marketing and development team to align everyone to a common goal.

After this, I moved on to rapid prototyping and building the front-end portal components using SASS and HTML5, basing designs on Material UI guidelines as a model - customising styles where possible to build the brand identity.

I also wrote a style guide for the marketing team - to maintain consistency.

I managed my own tasks with an agile approach using Trello. Being well-organised and keeping up good communications with senior management throughout the process.

UI and UX designer for Burp Suite Enterprise

In these projects my key responsibilities were to work collaboratively with stakeholders, product managers and developers on the product design from ideation to release and testing.

Techniques and practices:

  • Kick off meetings to align the team vision, with paper prototyping, user journey mapping, storyboards, personas templates and whiteboard mapping
  • User interviews with the product manager to learn key information about our user(s) interactions with the product
  • Low resolution wireframes and team sessions for quick feedback and problem solving
  • User / task flows, persona creation, content mapping, information architecture
  • High resolution and interactive prototypes in basic HTML and SASS to test concepts and ensure accessibility standards are being met
  • SVG animations for loading screens and spinners
  • Working with product managers on Jira story writing within an Agile development framework to help make sure the design scope is communicated to a high standard
  • Regular communication with developers and product managers to discuss and iterate designs adapting rapidly to change, learning from mistakes and quickly adapting ideas
  • UI testing
  • Managing style guides and component libraries to check rules are consistent throughout UI components, layouts and interactions

UI and UX designer, and front-end web developer for PortSwigger company website

My role here was to both design and write/architect HTML and SASS code for the front-end of the company website. The key aim was to design and develop ideas as quickly as possible whilst maintaining style consistency, writing clean code which could be released and updated within an Agile workflow.

It would be true to say that this was a huge challenge, but with help from a great team with highly talented management and well-experienced developers, I've gained a lot of excellent skills and experience.

Techniques and practices:

  • Design, build and manage UI patterns, components, layouts and templates
  • Write and build the web pages in HTML and SASS (within a .NET and CSharp back-end)
  • Organise modular based components, layouts and templates
  • Coding and maintaining templates in Salesforce Desk and Blogger, to achieve consistent and working code throughout
  • Usability and cross-browser testing

UI and UX designer for Burp Mobile framework

To build a mobile version of our web security testing tool for iOS.

In this project I was given a very short window of time to help design the front end of this mobile app.

Techniques and practices:

  • Research iOS UI patterns and interaction behaviour
  • Plan and sketch out possible design improvements which could help to simplify the UX and improve the visual attractiveness of the UI
  • Work very collaboratively and often worked ‘live’ on the code with the developer so we could rapidly iterate the design

Personal and professional development

I have a passion and curiosity  for learning, therefore I attend many design events and meetups.

I am often on the look out for a new course or blog post to improve her understanding of how things work.

Events attended:

  • Smashing Conference, Barcelona
  • DesignsOps Manchester
  • Design Week Manchester
  • UX Crunch
  • UX Sessions
  • Real UX
  • EndHomelessnessDigital
  • Ladies that UX Mancs

Hobbies
